China Reaffirms One-China Stance, Warns Against Taiwan Activities in Nigeria

The Chinese government has reiterated its commitment to the One-China principle, warning against what it described as attempts by Taiwan to strengthen unofficial diplomatic influence in Nigeria. The statement was made during a media engagement in Abuja hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

Speaking at the event themed “Understanding the One China Principle,” Chinese Embassy Counsellor Dong Hairong stated that Nigeria has consistently recognised the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing China since diplomatic relations began in 1971. She stressed that Taiwan remains an inseparable part of China under Beijing’s policy framework.

China also expressed concern over recent interactions involving Nigerian journalists and Taiwanese officials, as well as discussions surrounding the possible relocation of Taiwan’s trade office back to Abuja. According to Chinese officials, such actions could undermine existing agreements between Nigeria and China regarding the One-China policy.

The envoy recalled that Nigeria previously relocated Taiwan’s representative office from Abuja to Lagos in line with the One-China principle, describing the move as a key foundation for stable bilateral relations. She further noted that Nigeria reaffirmed its support for the policy during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to China in 2024.

China warned against support for separatist narratives linked to Taiwan and urged Nigerian institutions, media organisations, and stakeholders to continue respecting China’s territorial integrity and diplomatic position on Taiwan.
