2027: Court Orders INEC to Review Election Timelines Pending Appeal
A Federal High Court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately review aspects of its proposed 2027 general election timetable following an ongoing legal dispute challenging parts of the electoral schedule.
The ruling, delivered on Tuesday in Abuja, came after a coalition of political stakeholders and civil society groups filed a suit alleging that certain deadlines released by INEC could disenfranchise political parties and candidates preparing for the 2027 elections.
According to court documents, the plaintiffs argued that the current timeline for party primaries, candidate substitution, and voter registration updates may violate provisions of the Electoral Act and reduce fair participation in the democratic process.
In its interim decision, the court ordered INEC to reassess the disputed timetable while the appeal process continues. The judge emphasized that maintaining fairness, transparency, and equal political participation remains critical ahead of the 2027 polls.
INEC, through its legal representatives, maintained that the timetable was designed to ensure adequate preparation for the nationwide elections and compliance with constitutional deadlines. However, the commission assured Nigerians that it would study the court ruling and respond appropriately within the framework of the law.
Political analysts say the development could affect preparations by major political parties, especially those already mobilizing for presidential, governorship, and legislative primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
The case has been adjourned for further hearing as interested parties await the appellate courtâs final determination on the matter.
