Post-Primary Chaos Worsens as INEC Fixes Candidates’ Submission Deadline

The political atmosphere in Nigeria has become increasingly tense following escalating disputes from party primaries, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) maintains its deadline for the submission of candidates’ lists ahead of upcoming elections.

Reports indicate that several political parties are struggling to conclude rerun primaries and resolve internal conflicts triggered by controversial delegate processes, court injunctions, and factional disagreements. The situation has left many aspirants uncertain about their electoral fate as the deadline approaches.

INEC reiterated that the timetable for nomination submission is non-negotiable, stressing that political parties must comply with electoral guidelines to ensure a smooth preparation process for the general elections. The commission warned that failure to meet deadlines could result in disqualification of candidates whose documentation is incomplete or delayed.

Within major parties such as the APC and PDP, internal crises have deepened, with rival factions disputing the legitimacy of primary results in several states. Some aspirants have already headed to court, seeking judicial intervention to overturn or validate contested nominations.

Political analysts warn that the ongoing turmoil could weaken party cohesion and affect voter confidence if not urgently addressed. They also note that repeated litigation and rushed primaries may increase the risk of ballot errors and post-election disputes.

INEC, however, insists it is focused on maintaining electoral order and ensuring that only duly nominated candidates appear on the ballot, in line with constitutional provisions and electoral law.
