2027: Police, INEC Move Against Early Campaigns

The Nigeria Police Force and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have jointly warned political parties and their supporters against engaging in premature electioneering activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two institutions, in separate statements on Thursday, emphasized that political campaigns are only permitted within the timeframe stipulated by the Electoral Act and the commission’s guidelines.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, reminded political parties that the commission had yet to release the official timetable for the polls. “The law is clear. Any campaign or political advertisement outside the approved period amounts to a violation of the Electoral Act, and offenders will be sanctioned,” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, echoed the warning, stressing that security agencies will not hesitate to enforce the law. “We have observed with concern the early display of campaign posters and rallies in some parts of the country. This is illegal, and those found guilty will face prosecution,” he said.

Both bodies appealed to political leaders to caution their supporters and focus instead on strengthening internal democracy, party structures, and issue-based politics.

Analysts say the warnings come amid rising political tension, as major parties begin to position themselves for the 2027 presidential and gubernatorial contests.
