Nigeria TV Info — Bala Mohammed: Defections Won’t Sink PDP, Party Will Reclaim Power in 2027

Abuja, Nigeria — October 12, 2025: The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, has declared that the wave of defections from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will not destroy the PDP, insisting that the opposition party remains strong and will reclaim power in 2027.

Speaking with journalists on Saturday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Media Sub-Committee of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP National Convention Publicity and Communication Subcommittee, described the defections as “acts of cowardice.”

The governor made the remark amid reports that Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, is set to join his Enugu counterpart, Governor Peter Mbah, in defecting to the APC in the coming days.

While expressing concern over the exit of some PDP governors and lawmakers, Mohammed assured that the party would withstand the current political turbulence and successfully hold its National Convention scheduled for November.

In a related development, a Federal High Court in Abuja declined to issue an interim order stopping the PDP from holding its planned meetings and national convention, paving the way for the party to proceed with its preparations.

Mohammed accused the APC-led federal government of using coercive tactics to weaken the opposition, alleging that the ruling party was determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

> “You know the style of leadership of the APC-led federal government in trying to make this country a one-party state. They have the power of coercion; they have the power of everything,” he stated.

Despite the defections, Mohammed maintained that the PDP’s grassroots support remains solid, emphasizing that most Nigerians at the local level are still loyal to the party.

> “Even those who left are not finding it easier because most of the people at the grassroots level are PDP and are not happy with the defections. Sometimes it is done because of permutations and calculations. But I assure you, I am not going anywhere. I am in PDP, and my state has no element of division,” he affirmed.

With renewed confidence and plans to revitalize its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections, the PDP is determined to reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading political force.
