Service Chiefs’ Sack Not Enough, Northeast Youths Tell Tinubu
Youths from Nigeria’s Northeast region have described President Bola Tinubu’s recent dismissal of service chiefs as an “incomplete step” towards solving the nation’s deepening insecurity. Speaking through the Coalition of Northeast Youth Groups (CNYG) in Maiduguri, the youths commended the president for showing decisiveness but urged him to go further by restructuring the entire security architecture.
According to the group’s spokesperson, Abubakar Maina, the problem lies not only with the leadership of the armed forces but also with outdated strategies, poor intelligence sharing, and lack of welfare for frontline soldiers. “We’ve lost too many lives to Boko Haram and banditry. Changing service chiefs is good, but what Nigerians need is a total overhaul of the system,” he said.
The youths further demanded increased recruitment of locals into the security services, greater collaboration with traditional leaders, and better coordination among the military, police, and intelligence agencies. They also called for improved social and economic interventions to address poverty and unemployment, which they said fuel insecurity.
Maina added that the government must match its actions with transparency and commitment to peacebuilding across the region. “Tinubu must show that this is not just another political gesture but a real move to end the bloodshed in our communities,” he concluded.
