Christian Killings: FG Disagrees as CAN Backs US Senator’s Claims on Religious Persecution

Detailed News:
The Federal Government has dismissed recent comments by a U.S. senator accusing Nigeria of allowing the persecution and killing of Christians. The government described the claim as “false, exaggerated, and politically motivated,” insisting that security agencies are tackling all forms of violence regardless of religion or ethnicity.

However, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has backed the U.S. senator’s position, saying that the global community’s concerns reflect the lived reality of many Christians in the country. CAN urged the federal authorities to address the root causes of religiously motivated attacks instead of engaging in denials.

While the FG maintained that several incidents in northern and central Nigeria were driven by criminality rather than religion, CAN countered that faith-based violence remains a serious issue that deserves urgent attention and global awareness.

Analysts say the dispute may heighten diplomatic tension between Nigeria and the U.S., which has repeatedly called for greater protection of minority faith groups in Africa’s largest democracy.
