Nigeria TV Info – 2022 Bronze Medallists Nigeria Exit FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup After Heavy Defeat to Italy
Abuja, Nigeria – The journey of the Nigeria U17 Women’s team, the Flamingos, at the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup came to an end on Tuesday following a 4-0 defeat to Italy. The Italian side extended their perfect run in the tournament, recording four wins in four matches.
The Flamingos entered the match determined to prove their credentials after advancing to the Round of 16, but Italy proved too strong. Nigeria could have taken the lead in the 24th minute when Captain Shakirat Moshood’s fierce strike from the left side of the penalty box was brilliantly pushed around the post by Italian goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni.
Italy broke the deadlock just before halftime as Anna Copelli weaved through the Nigerian defense to slot the ball past goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu.
Early in the second half, Nigeria thought they had equalized when Nguemo Terlumun poked the ball into the net following a tenacious effort from Queen Joseph. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled that Joseph had illegally kicked the ball from Robbioni’s hands, nullifying the goal.
Italy continued to dominate, ultimately securing a 4-0 victory and sending the Flamingos out of the tournament, ending Nigeria’s hopes of defending their 2022 bronze medal.
