New Countdown Rules Could Be Introduced to Speed Up World Cup Matches
The 2026 FIFA World Cup may see faster-paced games as footballâs rule-making body considers introducing countdowns on throw-ins, goal kicks, and substitutions.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs the laws of the game, is exploring new measures following positive feedback on the eight-second limit for goalkeepers to release the ball. Under the proposed rules, referees could enforce a five-second countdown for dead-ball situations like throw-ins and goal kicks if players are deemed to be delaying play.
Substitutions are also under review. Players entering the field could face a 10-second limit to complete the process. Exceeding this limit may see substitutes temporarily barred from entering, potentially for up to a minute. Additionally, injured players may be required to remain off the pitch for a set period to prevent teams from exploiting stoppages.
IFAB officials say the aim of these changes is to maintain the flow and tempo of matches, ensuring that fans enjoy a more continuous and engaging football experience.
