Senate Counters ‘Christian Genocide’ Claim, Describes Allegations as Misleading
The Nigerian Senate has dismissed recent allegations of a “Christian genocide” in parts of the country, describing them as unfounded and potentially harmful to national unity. The upper chamber said such claims—recently amplified by foreign lawmakers and advocacy groups—do not reflect the true situation in Nigeria.
Speaking on Thursday, Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, said while the nation faces security challenges affecting all citizens, portraying the crisis as religious persecution was “a distortion of facts” aimed at discrediting Nigeria internationally.
He added that the Senate remains committed to promoting peace, justice, and religious tolerance, urging global partners to rely on verified data rather than biased reports. The chamber called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect all Nigerians regardless of faith or ethnicity.
Adaramodu further noted that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of terrorism and banditry, stressing that the Senate will continue to support policies that ensure safety for every Nigerian.
