What Octogenarians Must Do to Live Beyond 90 Years — Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has advised octogenarians and elderly citizens on practical lifestyle habits that can help them live healthier and potentially surpass the age of 90 years.

Speaking on healthy ageing and longevity, Obasanjo emphasized that reaching advanced age is not enough without maintaining physical strength, mental alertness, and social relevance. According to him, many people fail to enjoy old age because they neglect basic health discipline earlier in life and fail to adjust as they grow older.

He noted that regular physical activity, even light exercises such as walking, stretching, and movement-based routines, are essential for keeping the body active and preventing age-related illnesses. He also stressed the importance of a balanced diet, recommending reduced intake of processed foods, salt, and excess sugar, while encouraging more natural and locally sourced meals.

The former president further highlighted mental health as a key factor in longevity. He explained that staying mentally engaged through reading, conversations, and continuous learning helps reduce cognitive decline. Social interaction, according to him, also plays a major role in preventing loneliness and depression among the elderly.

Obasanjo added that routine medical check-ups should not be ignored, as early detection of health issues significantly improves treatment outcomes. He urged older adults to avoid stress, remain calm in difficult situations, and maintain a positive outlook on life.

In his remarks, he concluded that disciplined living, moderation, and continuous engagement with life are the strongest tools for anyone who wishes to live beyond 90 years in good health.
